Hello Shopify!

15 March 2021 • 08:00

When I decided to leave my previous job last year, I did a lot of self-reflection about how I want to work, what I want to work on, and who I want to work for. With that insight, I searched for a matching role, both inside and outside Microsoft. It took a bit of time, and I had to leave Microsoft to get it, but I couldn’t have designed a better role for myself if I tried.

Today, I’m thrilled to be starting a new job at Shopify as Technical Advisor to the CEO. Like really, absolutely, delighted.

The role fits how I want to work and what I want to work on. As far as who I’ll be working for, I first met Tobi Lütke in the Ruby on Rails community a long time ago. It’s been a true joy to see his path develop through the years, and I’ve really admired over time how he’s consistently played the infinite game.

Finite games, in case you haven’t read either Finite and Infinite Games by James P. Carse or The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek,1 are ones like chess and football. They are played using a set of consistent rules, and there are winners and losers. The infinite game has no end. The purpose of playing isn’t to win, it’s to continue playing the game.

If there’s anything the world needs right now, it’s more people playing the infinite game. A lot more people.

It’s not just Tobi who I’m thrilled to be working with. The people I interviewed with — Delany Manders, Colin Bendell, Jeff Bruton, Simon Eskildsen,2 Jean-Michel Lemieux, and Nicole Montini —  have filled me with inspiration for what the future of working with them will be like. So, it’s with a lot of optimism, excitement, and gratitude that I start at Shopify today, along with over seventy other people starting this week.

Oh, and to pre-empt the inevitable question: My family and I will remain in Europe thanks to Shopify being digital by default.

You might find Simon Sinek’s book to be somewhat more approachable than Carse’s.
